mentalhealth Just before the pandemic was declared by the WHO, I found this little bracelet at a yoga studio while travelling for work. I left the building, but then turned around and walked back in and bought it. It was a low cost, impulse buy but there was something so simple about the word “thrive” that spoke to me. A few days later the world changed. Separated from loved ones and in a state of shock, this simple bracket hasn’t left my wrist and next to the love of my family and friends - and the ring that I received in exchange for vows - it is what has gotten me through these most unusual, yet deeply profound, months. It speaks to me today just as much because I’ve learned that thrive is a most often a choice.  When measured against realistic goals it can look like many things. Some days thrive is staying in your pyjamas vs staying in bed. Some days it’s crushing projects. Some days it’s being heroic at work. Some days it’s showing up. Some days it’s being an amazing supportive spouse. Some days it’s also just showing up. From home school to home made to home sick thrive is always possible. It’s all in the mindset and the measurement. Let’s all consider our brand of thrive and celebrate even the smallest of wins. Because the alternative is to simply survive and, well, that just doesn’t look as good on a bracelet. Nor does it feel as good. Thrive is a state of mind.

mentalhealth Some days are hard and some days are easy. I’ve learned that we all have our own journey to go on, and that is the beauty of it. Some days I win and other days I fail and most days are habits to build up to the wins. Life is not always pretty, it’s not all wins. It’s not all curated photos I put here but it’s not always struggle or hard times either. Some days are sweat pant days where I sit on my couch covered in Totoros 🐨 and I watch movies while doing my nails. It’s also long walks around Green Lake. It’s hot cocos on the balcony. It’s not entirely productive but that’s okay, it’s something my own. And I find comfort knowing this is my path through this life. ♥️ .

mentalhealth We all have aspirations and goals. We want to be somewhere, do something or achieve something. We want to be better at our studies, we want to write, we want to exercise, practice yoga, meditate. Or we want to just be a better version of ourselves. .
Whatever that may be, the only thing that probably stops us from pursuing it is our fear and procrastination. The “what if’s” in our lives are too skewed towards the negative side. We also may think that we are too late to pursue that goal. But just imagine, if you started today you would be ahead of the game by this time next year. All it takes for anything to happen is to BEGIN.

mentalhealth Trying to be creative lately has been so draining. Trying to working out and finding the motivation had been nonexistent. Waking up late and feeling like I got no sleep when I’ve been tossing and turning for hours. I felt like I was killing this quarantine thing. And then I fell into a slump the last couple of weeks... but it also doesn’t mean I’m not still killing it. I remind myself daily I have so much to be thankful for: family, friends, my health, new surroundings, maybe new friends, and the ability to connect in new ways. mentalhealth One of the first compulsions I worked on tackling was washing my hands before I would get in my car. I had this idea in my OCD brain that my car was “clean” and if I was going to drive anywhere, I had to get the “dirty” off of my hands before I could even get into the car. This compulsion - which I used to keep me safe, by some twisted OCD logic - was sometimes awkward and always time-consuming, forcing me to find a restroom sink everywhere I go and go through my hand-washing routine.

With the help of ERP (exposure and response prevention) therapy, I have been able to drive places without obsessively washing my hands beforehand. That’s a win!

This past month has been a trial.
I know I’m not the only one who’s found this whole ordeal hard but man alive this month has been one complicated mess.
It’s taken a whole heap of effort to drag myself out of bed, put on human clothes, a little bit of make up, eat some food and venture out the house.
My security and comforts were taken away and I had no idea whether I was coming or going, staying or leaving, loved or loathed and it’s been rough.
These past few weeks my incredible friends have proved their worth and have made me feel that I am enough and I can carry on and bring back that mother fucking rockstar I once was.
@small_soy and I have been going on early morning walks together each day, getting a t/a coffee from a different local business and just appreciating the beauty that surrounds us in this beautiful seaside town we’re lucky enough to live in.
Honestly, I’m feeling so grateful for the souls in my life right now that have proved themselves true and real throughout all this.
Im so excited that lockdown seems to be drawing to an end and life can hopefully return to some state of normality.
Hug ya friends, love them, value them.

honestly I struggled a lot today, comparing myself, anxiety, ed behaviors and thoughts, I won’t lie, recovery isn’t linear or perfect, learning to love ourselfs is a progress and we won’t be perfect, even the most confident person has insecurities but we have to embrace them! I started to think about snowflakes, they are all different but all beautiful, nobody says “this is prettier because is smaller” or “this is uglier because it has more curves” no!!! so why don’t we act like that?? different but special at your own, different and unique, nobody is more than others, we are valid, we are gorgeousssss x, keep beating those thoughts dear snowflake❄️💘
(btw those pics are old challenges that I’ve done lately)

Dealing with chronic anything is hard. Especially pain. It’s exhausting mentally and physically.

These last 3 weeks have been especially difficult since it’s starting to get really warm here. And most people in HI don’t have central air. (Electricity is expensive here) I do have fans though.

I’ve been so stressed out by some new developments in my life that thepain has gotten worse. Which does not make me feel fabulous.

I’m trying to take my own advice and make time for self care. But it’s hard sometimes, as I’m sure you all understand.

Life is complicated, but you don’t have to go through it alone. And YOU are FABULOUS!

mentalhealth Mi mente se siente muy inquieta. Nunca realmente me había detenido a entenderme. Por entenderme me refiero a escuchar las voces profundas de mis deseos , frustraciones, sueños, mis zonas erróneas ( sistema de creencias) , mi sistema de comunicación, mis intenciones y un sin fin de cosas que sigo por averiguar pero ahora sí con muchas ganas de resolverlas. Mucho tiempo ha pasado en el que quiero resolver rápido , mucho tiempo he pensado que tengo que ser X o Y para SER y ese camino se seguía sintiendo muy vacío. No tengo ningún afán de "resolver" el acertijo rápido. A veces lloro de melancolía, a veces de mucha alegría. Cometo errores. Tengo fé en el nuevo segundo , minuto y día. Pensar en que todos los días son un nuevo día me da mucha paz , me emociona que cada día puedo ser una mejor versión. Lejos de tenerme lástima y sentir culpa por fallar o cometer un error, me tengo compasión, acepto que fallé y me miro con compasión. Lejos de buscar la aprobación ( incluso mía) busco mi mejor versión y tengo paciencia. He vivido muchas experiencias de muchos tipos. No creo que he sido perfecta mucho menos santa. Pido perdón por cualquier dolor que le haya causado a alguien. Pido perdón por todas las veces que no me elegí yo primero. Pido perdón por todas las veces que no intencioné con amor o transmitía un msj negativo. Me libero y dejó ir. Me gusta mucho compartir salud , me gusta que la gente que tengo a la par se sienta bien. Me preocupa la conciencia mundial. Quiero un mundo más conciente. Creo que soy parte de una generación súper poderosa, llena de fuerza y energía. Confío en esta generación de gente auténtica y abundancia ilimitada. Confío en que todos hacemos los mejor que podemos.  Creo en el amor. Creo que el amor es la fuente y es la razón por la que estoy viva. Creo que dios es el amor. Creo que todos venimos de la misma fuente de amor y por eso somos iguales.  Gracias por existir. Gracias por ser parte de mi vida en el pasado y en el ahora. Gracias por vivir este momento de pandemia conmigo. Gracias por vivir y transformarnos juntos.

mentalhealth February marked my 2 year RA diagnosis & weekly chemo (MTX) anniversaries (#115 & counting). Waking up daily to uncertainty and continually learning to adapt my daily routines, I would’ve never imagined waking up 2 years ago with autoimmune conditions that’ll never leave. Fighting to literally find my feet again and slowly rebuild my lost strength. Aggressive RA & comorbidities have taken a lot from me, climbing each mountain whether it be treatment trials, added diagnoses, or being happy it only took 5 vs. 40 mins to inject myself. It has also brought a few good things as I’ve had the opportunity to share my story with immense vulnerability on this demographically rare disease while highlighting my reality. I’m also fortunate to connect with others with various chronic conditions who may feel no hope after diagnosis. By sharing the pages in my developing story I hope to support smoother transitions for others.

I promised myself through sickness & health, I would remain true to myself. I committed that no matter how steep the mountains, my illness would not become who I am, rather it become only a part of me. For the past 2 years, I placed my goals on hold. Fast forward to the present where I continue to discover new things about my conditions. New med trials & plenty of monitoring continue while living my life the best I can when I can. I am humbled by the support I’ve received as I moved across the country to begin my MSc Psychology degree.

I am often asked, how I cope with daily agonizing pain and continual adversity? I don’t see that I had a choice and I remain determined for RA to not become all of me. I brave each day the best I can, enjoy the days with lower pain, and celebrate all victories. Even though I hold hope very optimistically, there are moments when reality gets to me where compassion over competition is the key. No matter the battle you face, be kind to yourself & others as each experience are as unique as what occurs in the depths of the invisibility. I am happy to be pursuing progress for my health & what I love passionately, I didn’t come this far to only come this far 💜

February marked my 2 year RA diagnosis & weekly chemo (MTX) anniversaries (#115 & counting). Waking up daily to uncertainty and continually learning to adapt my daily routines, I would’ve never imagined waking up 2 years ago with autoimmune conditions that’ll never leave. ❀ A common misconception about OCD is that all suffers just like being neat and tidy. This can feel so minimising to complex nature of this potentially paralysing mental illness ❀ ⠀

❀ OCD is based on obsessions which lead to subsequent compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted persistent and uncontrollable thoughts, images, impulses, worries, fears or doubts or a combination of all these. They’re always intrusive, unwanted, disturbing and most importantly significantly interfere with the sufferers ability to function on a day-to-day basis as they are incredibly difficult to ignore. When someone is affected by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder their natural response is to fight their unwanted and anxiety provoking intrusive thoughts with purposeful behaviours and deliberate actions (this includes both mental and physical actions, seeking reassurance and avoidance of people, places and objects), these behaviours are called compulsions ❀⠀

❀ There are many types of OCD but in this post I’m going to touch on the type that is the most misunderstood ❀⠀

❀ Intrusive thoughts are very distressing, they often go against your morals and beliefs. They are unwanted and pop into your head. These thoughts can be violent, sexual, religious etc. Suffers often believing that having these thoughts makes them a bad person ❀ ⠀

❀ OCD has been named the ‘doubting disease’ because the intrusive thoughts feel so believable that your scared you’ll  loose control of yourself. You doubt literally everything you’ve ever known ❀⠀

❀ Everyone gets intrusive thoughts but the problem with this disorder is that you’re so anxious about having the thoughts, that you pay attention to them and end up having them more often. ⠀

❀ I’m beginning to recognise that real happiness isn’t something large and looming on the horizon ahead but something small, numerous & already here. A decent breakfast, a warm sunset. Your little everyday joys all lined up in a row ❀⠀

❀ What the world is going through at the moment is really scary, however I think this period has shown a lot of people that we needed to step back from the stresses of everyday life ❀ ⠀
⠀
❀ It’s allowed us to check in with ourselves, prioritise our health, appreciate the little everyday things we take for granted and live in a way where we are more mindful of the impact our actions have on others ❀ ⠀

❀ So although it’s hard, there are so many small positives amongst the chaos of life right now ❀

❀ I’ve decided to write about my experience of working & having mental health issues, as well as any tips that I have to cope within the working environment ❀⠀

❀ Getting a job helped me so much with my mental health, it gave me a purpose, also having people relying on me meant that I had to work hard on my recovery to be well enough to keep working. Work was also a massive distraction so made me feel a lot better ❀⠀
⠀
❀ Having my own money also had such a positive impact, the financial independence meant that I could plan activities to look forward to, pay for things like getting my nails done or new clothes and not be financially dependent on my family ❀⠀
⠀
❀ However there have been times where I have struggled a lot in work, for example when my eating was bad I struggled to function and had to take some time off, it was hard because I felt I wasn’t a reliable worker for doing this ❀ ⠀
⠀
❀ BUT you are allowed to SELF CERTIFY for the first 7 days of illness, which includes mental illness. Some employers might try manipulate you into coming in work but mental illness is just as valid to take sickness leave from as physical illness ❀⠀
⠀
❀ My main struggle at work is self doubting thoughts, thinking I’m not good at the job and very replaceable, although what I’ve found is that if people weren’t doing a good job someone would tell them, companies want staff just as much as staff need the job and aren’t quick to fire people if a small mistake is made occasionally If you are open and honest about your mental health problems companies are often more understanding if you do mess up or have days off. ❀⠀

❀ Some managers do take the piss though and overwork you so it’s important to stand your ground and set boundaries on shift patterns/ overtime, having a balanced work life ration is SO important for your mental wellbeing (if you take anything from this post this is probably the most important point I’m making) ❀⠀
